The Raid: Redemption (2011) – 2.5/5

Stupid, relatively mindless action film with a paper-thin plot and some pretty weak characters, but it has some cool fight scenes here and there, and some of the setups were interesting, and it has way more gore than you’d expect from what’s essentially an action film. But man, what a dumb film. Barely a plot to be had, and what little there is is cheesy, implausible, and doesn’t make much sense.

Not much to say about this one, I’m afraid. Don’t believe the hype, I guess. It’s not the worst movie I’ve ever seen; like I wrote earlier, it has its moments. Some of the fight scenes are interesting, and you can tell there’s some skill behind the camera given the way the film is shot, but there’s barely a story here, which for me is the heart of any good film. It’s obvious the plot of the film is just an excuse to squeeze a half-dozen or so fight scenes into a two-hour running time, and to that extent, it succeeds. But that’s all the film is, ultimately: a live action video game. If that’s your thing, then great, watch the film. But if you’re looking for something more, avoid.

  1. Thanks for the warning. Not that I was in the least interested in this film. To me, even the preview was dull!
