Vals Im Bashir (Waltz with Bashir) (2008) – 3.5/5

Eh. This is that foreign movie with the weird animation that people were ranting and raving about a while ago. Eh. It was okay. Overrated.

The main problem I had with this film was the lack of historical context. Sure, many of the stories told were interesting, and the ending was very disturbing, and rightly so, but what the heck was it all about? I’m not familiar with the situation this movie is describing; it’s not common knowledge, and some background, even a quick written foreword at the beginning to put things into perspective, would have elevated this film immensely.

As a result, the film is distant and relatively uninteresting, only managing to hold your attention for short bursts of time before releasing you back into its disconnected confusion. And that’s a shame, because the story I think the film is trying to tell is one worth hearing.

I also didn’t much care for a certain scene near the middle involving a character watching porn. It was more weird than funny, and seemed out of place with the rest of film. It was also quite graphic for an R rated film. Stupid.

Anyway, I don’t know. This plays out more like a documentary than a narrative at times, but there’s no context; weird, disturbing stuff just happens, and it’s tragic and sad, but there’s nothing holding it together. There was also way too much male nudity for my taste. It was a good try, though.
