I’m a Cyborg, But That’s OK – 4.5/5
What a crazy, messed up movie. If you’re wondering why I decided to watch this film, it’s because it was directed by one of the finest filmmakers today, Chan-wook Park. You know, the guy who directed “Oldboy.” Yes, him.
Like most of his stuff, it takes a little while to get into, and even longer to fully understand what’s happening from scene to scene, but once you do, the film becomes something utterly brilliant. What I especially love about Chan-wook Park is his shot composition; it’s simply some of the best I’ve ever seen. His framing and lighting and all that is so utterly unique that you can’t help but watch in awe, even though you may not understand what any given scene is about or how it relates to the plot.
The film is also really interesting psychologically, as the main character, and everyone around her, just so happen to be completely insane. I’ve never seen a movie dive into the realm of psychology the way this does, and how it manages to stay light and funny throughout is beyond me.
In conclusion, it’s great, brilliant, creative filmmaking. Something to aspire to. This is the kind of skill Richard Kelly needed but lacked to make “Southland Tales” work; cohesion amidst abstraction.
Blah blah blah, great movie, go see it.
